Change your EPFO Name: Step by Step Process

Facing mismatched names between your EPFO account, bank, and Aadhaar? Don’t sweat it! This guide empowers you to seamlessly update your EPFO name through the UAN Member e-Sewa Portal, ensuring smooth access to crucial services like PF transfers and withdrawals.

Steps to Update Your EPFO Name:

  1. Log in to the UAN Portal: Access the UAN portal (https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/) with your UAN ID and password.
  2. Navigate to “Manage” and “Modify Basic Details”: Locate the “Manage” section and select “Modify Basic Details” to initiate the name change process.
  3. Enter New Name and Submit: Update your desired name in the designated field and click “Update.”
  4. Employer Approval: A message will confirm “Pending for Approval by Employer.” Contact your employer promptly and provide them with supporting documents (Aadhaar, passport, bank statement, birth certificate, etc.) for verification.
  5. Field Office Approval: Once employer approval is granted, the Field Office will review the change. This process might take up to 3 weeks.

Supporting Document Requirements:

Due to potential irregularities, EPFO categorizes name changes as minor or major, requiring different document sets. A portal feature is planned to facilitate online document submission. For now, submit any of the following documents to your employer:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Passport
  • Bank Statement
  • Birth Certificate
  • Other government-issued ID

Updating Father’s Name:

The process for updating your father’s name differs slightly. You’ll need to download the Joint Declaration form, attach supporting documents, and submit it to the PF Office.

Extended Processing Time:

Expect the name change to take longer than 3 weeks due to multi-level approvals (Clerk, Section Supervisor, Accounts Officer, Assistant Commissioner, PF Commissioner). In some cases, it may take up to 5 weeks.

Upcoming Streamlined Process:

EPFO plans to introduce a new process where employees and employers can upload joint declarations with supporting documents like Aadhaar, birth certificates, and driving licenses directly through the portal. This will simplify and expedite the name change process.
